security

US intelligence agency is allegedly tapping all phone calls made in Kenya, possibly informing the recent travel advisories and the heightened alert at its Embassy in Nairobi. The spying claim that could be a major breach of privacy for millions of Kenyans is contained in a WikiLeaks exposé by the global whistleblower Edward Snowden. Already, the US embassy in Nairobi has announced plans to cut down  its staff following what it termed information on potential terror threats. Britain has also evacuated its holidaying citizens over what it terms credible terror threats. Documents leaked by Mr Snowden reveal that the National Security Agency is recording millions of phone communications made on mobile and even fixed lines, with the intention of spying and possibly thwarting any terror threats. Further, NSA archives and replays specific conversations of interest for up to a month in a secret surveillance system code-named Somalget. There is no indication, however, whether the information collected could be abused. See also: Mudavadi to lead UDF in a strategy meeting But the surveillance could be a major concern for ordinary citizens minding their own business. It is expected that the claims, if confirmed, could unsettle Kenya whose relations with the US have been lukewarm at best. Kenya has not granted permission to any country for such surveillance, while such tapping could make up a criminal offence. The Constitution guarantees freedom to privacy that includes communication. The Intercept, an online publication that releases the US’ classified information leaked by Snowden, alleges that the NSA secret programme, Mystic, collects information and content from all phone networks in Kenya and three other countries. “All told, the NSA is using Mystic to gather personal data on mobile calls placed in countries with a combined population of more than 250 million people,” The Intercept reported yesterday. Mystic listens in on mobile networks for information that reveals the time, source, and destination of calls. Somalget is a cutting-edge tool that enables the NSA to vacuum and store the actual content of every conversation in an entire country. The documents claim the spy operation in Kenya is “sponsored” by the CIA, which collects GSM metadata with the potential for content at a later date.  “It is believed the focus of the local operation is to intercept phone communication relating to terror since the US works closely with local security forces in combating the militant fundamentalist group Al-Shabaab, based in neighbouring Somalia,” reports The Intercept.

IMPEACHMENT OF THE PRESIDENT

A CORD legislator has warned his colleagues against calls to impeach President Uhuru Kenyatta saying such a move would be premature and not in the interest of Kenyans. Ford Kenya’s Nyamira senator, Monga’re Bwo’Okongo, instead urged the opposition to engage the Jubilee coalition in constructive and objective debate to provide alternatives to the raging insecurity in the country. He said the debate would further ethnic balkanisation of the country, a year after the general election. The Ford Kenya senator faulted his fellow legislators as being too insensitive to the plight of Kenyans and the aftermath of the 2007 post-election violence. “It is ridiculous to start debate to impeach the president. That would be premature and tantamount to reversing the gains this country has made. It is time we focused on the future and how as the opposition we can plot to democratically win an election,” Okong’o said. He urged the opposition to concentrate in providing alternative policies and legislations that can help improve the lives of millions of Kenyans living in abject poverty.

INSECURITY

Insecurity is defined as:

* Feeling of not being "good enough" to meet the challenge of a situation you face in life.
* Sense of helplessness in the face of problems, conflict or concerns.
* Belief that one is inadequate or incompetent to handle life's challenges.
* Fear of being discovered as inadequate, ill-fitted or unsuited to meet responsibilities at home, school or on the job.
* Sense of not fitting in, being "out of sync" with those in your peer group.
* Perception that life is unpredictable with most of the expectations you have to meet not clearly understood.
* Sense of always climbing up a mountain, never being able to reach the top.
* Sense of lacking support or reinforcement where you live, work or play.
* Results from a sense of being unaccepted, disapproved or rejected.
* Inner turmoil coming from a lack of direction or bewilderment as to where you are going, what your goals are and what responses are appropriate for events in life.

Insecure people may have:

* Been raised in a chaotic, unpredictable or volatile environment in which they were kept off balance, on guard or on edge.
* Experienced a major tragedy or loss in their lives and are having a difficult time in accepting this loss and adjusting to the change.
* Experienced a major catastrophe in life (e.g., divorce, losing a job, bankruptcy, failure in school, losing a friend, lack of acceptance into social or civic groups, etc.) that led them to question their personal competency.
* A poorly developed self-concept with low self-esteem, lacking belief in their personal goodness, skills or abilities.
* Never felt accepted by the others' in their life, so much so that they became chronically shy, retiring and withdrawn in their interactions.
* Had an unrealistic list of rules and expectations prescribed by significant others in their life, rules they are striving to meet even in their current life.
* A poor body image, making them believe that others see them in a negative light. This makes them self-conscious, tense and anxious in dealing with others.
* Never received enough positive reinforcement or feedback from others about their talents and abilities, leaving them unclear as to their skills.
* Been given very little direction, guidance or discipline in their earlier lives leaving them unable to cope with the current pressures of life.
* Always felt overshadowed or overlooked due to the people in their lives who seemed to be more successful, smarter, prettier, more handsome, more athletic or higher achievers, getting much attention.

This can foster doubt in an insecure person's ability to gain recognition for their successes, and can make them doubt their ability to achieve success.

What do chronically insecure people believe?

* I can never accomplish the task facing me.
* Everybody is looking at me, just waiting for me to make a fool of myself.
* I am a failure.
* I am ugly and awful to look at.
* I can never win. I am a loser.
* What is the sense of trying, I'll never get it right.
* No matter how hard I work to achieve, I never get any recognition.
* I am incompetent in everything.
* How could anybody ever say anything good about me?
* I failed them in the past; therefore, I am a failure today.
* Once a failure, always a failure.
* There is only one direction for me to go in this organization and that is down and out.
* No one could ever like, respect or accept me.
* I don't deserve to be treated nicely.
* I don't fit in here or anywhere else for that matter.
* Everyone else looks so good, so together; I feel so out of it compared to them.
* I am an incomplete person and will always be that way.
* I am so afraid that no one will like me.
* Why would anyone care to hear what I say, how I feel or what I think?
* People are just nice to you in order to use you and get something they want from you.

What are some negative effects of insecurity?

People who are insecure can:

* Have difficulties in establishing healthy, long-lasting relationships.
* Be perceived incorrectly by others as being snobbish or uppity.
* Become victims of fears that impair their freedom of action or choice.
* Be candidates for paranoia feeling others are out to get them.
* Scare others away from them by their defensive attitude.
* Be over-controlled emotionally, having problems letting others in on their emotions. This can lead others to guess what is going on until the passivity of the insecure person leads to an over-reaction by the others, resulting in conflict or rejection.
* Have problems on the job or in school when they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to do a task efficiently but are told to do it in a different, less effective manner. They get so uptight about the job and are fearful of standing up for what they believe that they get angry, hostile and resentful until they either quit or succeed in submerging their emotions.
* Get passed over for promotions, advances or honors because they are so quiet about what it is they do. This leads the insecure persons to feel more unaccepted, unappreciated and under-valued.
* Have problems meeting people and often can become debilitated socially by chronic shyness.
* Become so inward that they seek to escape into their fantasy life rather than deal with the reality of their lives.

In order to overcome insecurity, people need to:

* Be willing to be put in vulnerable positions in life where they might get hurt.
* Take risks to change their current behavior.
* Trust others enough to expose themselves to them, risking vulnerability and the possibility of being hurt.
* Have a healthy and humorous belief in themselves in order to overlook their exaggerated need for acceptance and approval.
* Take a rational approach to each problem they face so that they are no longer inhibited by debilitating fears or beliefs.
* Practice assertive behavior in their lives, earning respect and the acknowledgment of their rights.
* Arouse the courage to take small steps in learning to experience success and overcoming their lack of belief in self. Once the success is experienced, they can build on it to gain the courage to act out of a strong conviction in their self-goodness and worth.
* Break the barrier or outer shell of the self-doubt they have hidden behind and reach out to others. Breaking out of their "shells" requires letting go of past hurts (real or imagined) and moving on with life.
* Open themselves to the possibility of success and accomplishment. Visualize or make a prophecy of winning at life so their energies are focused in a growth direction.
* Reward themselves for who they are and capitalize on their strengths, attributes, skills and competencies.

What steps can people take to handle insecurity?

Step 1: Answer the following questions in your journal:

a. What behavior traits signal my insecurity?
b. What happened in my past to make me insecure?
c. What are some of my beliefs that account for my insecurity?
d. What are some negative consequences I've experienced due to my insecurity?
e. What behavior traits do I need to develop in order to overcome my insecurity?

Step 2: After identifying your insecurity, how can you handle it? Answer the following questions in your journal:

a. What substitute behavior traits could I develop that would indicate security in myself?
b. What are some positive consequences of exhibiting such secure behavior traits in my life?
c. What are some rational beliefs I must develop in order to exhibit secure behavior in my life?
d. How will my life change if I exhibit secure behavior?
e. What is my action plan to develop security in my life?
f. What obstacles stand in the way of my executing this action plan?
g. How can I overcome the obstacles to my development of self-confidence and security?

Step 3: Implement the plan of action in Step 2. Keep a log in your journal as you go through each stage of handling your insecurity.

Step 4: The following project is designed to help you develop secure behavior by learning about yourself through the eyes of the other people in your life.

"Overcoming Insecurity" Collage

Ask at least 6 close friends and/or relatives to assist you in making a collage. Tell them you have been assigned to make a collage about yourself for school, work or a club project. All collages must be 2 by 3 feet. The collage must be completed within 2 weeks of the time you ask your friends and/or relatives to help you. Ask them to send you magazine pictures, sayings, articles, photos, prizes, trinkets, cards, drawings, objects, ribbons, etc., indicative of the various strengths, attributes, talents, skills, knowledge, virtues, competencies or abilities you possess. Ask them to send a short explanation with each item they send you. Ask each person to send at least ten items.

Once you gather the items, paste them on poster board in collage fashion. On the back of the collage paste the explanations for the items.

Share your collage with your friends, family and helpers. Explain each item on the collage, and explain that they have helped you overcome some of your personal insecurity by giving accurate and honest feedback on reasons why you

CONDOM USE, AWARENESS AND PERCEPTIONS AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN KENYA

Risky sexual practices are rampant among adolescents in Kenya. The sexual practices include unprotected sexual intercourse. Consequences of risky sexual behaviour include poor performance in school and infection with sexually transmitted diseases. This study sought to assess the levels of awareness and perceptions of condom use among secondary school students in the prevention of STDs in Bahati division of Nakuru North District, Kenya. This study adopted an ex post facto survey research design because the research design does not influence the cause or the effect of the current status of the phenomenon under study. The target population included 12,319 students and 52 teacher counsellors in the 52 secondary schools. A sample of 372 students and six teacher counsellors was selected from six schools. Thestudy utilised 36 mixed secondary schools. Proportionate-stratified random sampling was used to draw the sample of 372 students from six schools. Data was collected through the administration of questionnaires. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics with the aid of SPSS version 11.5 for windows. One of the findings was that the students expected the Guidance and Counselling departments in their schools to play an assertive role in creating awarenesson sexuality issues affecting them. Following the finding, the study recommended that the Guidance and Counsellingprogramme be strengthened in the schools to enhance the awareness of sexual behavior and its related consequences

IMPEACHMENT TIME

Members of the County Assembly of Kericho voted out Governor Paul Chepkwony as his Nairobi counterpart, Evans Kidero, joined the list of regional heads temporarily reinstated by the Supreme Court. Chepkwony lost the impeachment war when 32 MCAs voted for his ouster, against the 15 who abstained. Prof Chepkwony’s fate now lies with the Senate, which on Tuesday sacked Martin Wambora as Embu Governor for the second time after the High Court reversed his first impeachment. The Supreme Court is already hearing appeals by Governors Peter Munya (Meru), Okoth Obado (Migori) and Nathif Jama (Garissa). Kericho County Assembly Speaker Japheth Mutai declared Chepkwony impeached at exactly 4:49pm after a heated debate, during which majority of the members were not persuaded by the governor’s ardent plea. His deputy, Susan Kikwai, will take over in acting capacity pending the outcome of the Senate proceedings. The law requires that once the County Speaker furnishes the Senate Speaker with the verdict, the Senate should establish a committee to investigate the claims against the governor and a decision made within 10 days.

WHAT NEXT

The Court of Appeal Tuesday nullified the election of Dr Evans Kidero and his deputy Jonathan Mueke as Nairobi Governor and Deputy Governor respectively.

Two judges upheld the complaint that his arch-rival Ferdinand Waititu raised but a third judge dismissed the appeal.

The judges said the petition court had suppressed the truth by not allowing Mr Waititu to cross-examine witnesses.

They also said the judges’ refusal for a scrutiny of votes as had been demanded by Waititu had rendered his petition null.

The refusal for scrutiny further suppressed Waititu’s evidence, they added

They said the election was fraught with irregularities and malpractices which naturally should have attracted criminal investigation by the presiding court.

KILLER LIQUOR

On a Wednesday two weeks ago, an office worker took the afternoon off to attend a friend’s funeral.
That evening, he and other friends who had attended the burial met at a bar to “see off” their departed friend. They drank until the following morning.
Like that office worker, many Kenyans use every excuse in the book to indulge in alcohol – from a toast to good fortune, celebrating a wedding or the birth of a child or to cope with tragic news, such as death and divorce. In short, every occasion presents an opportunity to reach for the bottle.
Indeed, according to Nacada, 16.6 per cent of the urban population consumes an alcoholic beverage of some sort, compared to 11.4 per cent in the rural areas. The report also shows that Rift Valley leads in the consumption of traditional brews with six per cent of its population partaking, while western Kenya and Nairobi top the charts in the consumption of chang’aa with 7.1 and 7.2 per cent of their respective populations consuming the spirit.
Nairobi and Central also lead in the consumption of mainstream brews with 15.7 and 9.2 per cent of their populations making regular trips to the bar.
“It is true that we are drinking too much,” Mr Shadrack Kirunga, a counsellor, said in an interview with the Nation on Wednesday.
He spoke as the death toll from the lethal brews consumed in six counties rose to 76, with 181 people still in hospital.
Kenyans’ drink problem, he said, starts taking root in universities, where it is fuelled by peer pressure, easy accessibility of alcohol, opportunity and the freedom to do whatever one wishes with one’s free time.
“Drinking is a big issue in our universities, which, unfortunately, graduates with many of us to our places of work, marriages, and other relationships we form

SELF-ESTEEM
According to him, Kenya’s drink problem is largely driven by low self-esteem, especially among men.
“Kenyan men feel that the women in their lives have become too strong, too independent, too smart and too educated – this is difficult for some men to handle, and so they end up feeling inadequate. To deal with this, they turn to alcohol,” he said.
Due to changing economic roles, men are no longer the sole providers for their families and their authority is no longer absolute. Interestingly, it is not just the men who earn less than their spouses who have been left nursing bruised egos; even the successful men still feel intimidated by strong women surrounding them.
“This problem will continue unless men re-orient themselves to the new social structure,” Mr Kirunga said.
Mr Paul Mbatia, a sociologist, said there would be no harm if Kenyans drunk to relax. However, the majority do so to escape their problems.
“The poor drink excessively because they are unemployed, unable to educate their children, and unable to fulfil other responsibilities that only money can fulfil,” he said. The rich, on the other hand, “tend to drink more than they should because they are unhappy, especially if there is no peace at home.”
The second reason he gave was that most Kenyans have no idea what to do with leisure time.
“There are people who have not found a better way to spend their time, the bar therefore becomes the most convenient place to go.”
Women, according to Mr Mbatia, drink to show that they are liberated. “It is their way of saying, here we are, we are women, and can do what men can do.”
However, Nacada boss John Mututho said access to alcohol was the number one reason turning Kenyans into alcoholics.
“When you get to a point where 10 shillings can get you alcohol, then you know you are headed for disaster,” he said.

MY STORY

MY STORY

The   cause of committing suicide is only not to expose his or her problem, many young people do share what affect them with the fear  that the problem will be later be brought out there confidential  messages or statements or kept within one’s  own heart though harmful and dangerous to them.  As a young person, we need a hearing ear where we can direct problems and difficulties

Many high school kids are dying day by day psychologically due to lack assistance either by teachers or guidance or even people around them, making life to be more complicated and even loosing the happiness toward the life they are in .when one share his or her problems it is that it is half way done, what most of many don’t consider to be working.

When I was in high school I used to be told that I can make it in life of which it was not possible to me because of want called it as poverty, which had invented my home at a great  lava of force not knowing that it  is possible for me to move from nowhere to somewhere and  to somebody was a beggar of  many things to whomever was near to me, moving from a beggar to a giver is due what many call it miracle, but to me I know it was the hand of lord has done  a  fantastic thing which many can accept even  having not told any story of the past .

Where I am is not where I was and not the end of my road, am moving far away from here .i would like to tell all those who are in darkness that a day is coming when  you will be called the blessed son and daughter of the most high God, don’t give up in life , and don’t kiss your hope goodbye, don’t say u cannot make while you want to try again, because  you don’t know what you have until you lose it, and  how many people wish to be where you are, move forward until you get what you want and missed for  many  days.

In conclusion ,lets enjoy what we have, and utilize  it for it to be added to us, don’t look down for the one in  need because you don’t know about tomorrow, today is you and tomorrow we don’t know.  Enjoy when you are still a life you don’t know the future.

EMBRACING COMMUNITY POLICING

It is the right of every Kenyan to enjoy the benefits and the rights of being Kenyans. It does not matter the region, gender or religion. And so part of it is security and protection. For many years, insecurity has been a theory that no one knows its discovery; a lot of citizen has died, others has been moved from their houses to move even to slum areas and many more.

Every government has been majoring their efforts on the subject but with very minimal results. Terrorism being a national phenomenon that has consumed a lot money, time and resources. Having in mind the recent attack in Mombasa, in the church, killing worshippers.

Therefore, even though it is the role of the government to protect its citizens, people has to improve in community policing and embrace Nyumba Kumi initiative. Know your neighbors and be nice to them, and whenever you suspect any intruder, pass it to the security personnel..........
